June 29, 2010- Best Oyster Spawn in the History of the Shellfish Group!

"I have never seen anything like it" said Rick Karney, director of the Shellfish Group for the past 35 years. The oysters from Tisbury Great Pond were not particularly large, or numerous. It was just a regular spawning day at the Shellfish group.

Upstairs,  the temperature was easily 100o F by the spawning table.  After a slow start and a male sacrificed and striped, a male spawned and then a few females.  An hour later, almost all the oysters on the table were spawning heavily.

The spawn yielded an unprecedented 300 million fertilised eggs!!!!

Most eggs were released in Edgartown and Tisbury great pond
