July 13, 2011- Oysters Are Born!

The Edgartown Great Pond broodstock had been kept cool in a closed system for the past month to make sure we didn't miss our window.  The gnarly old oyster broodstock, had been transported to the Vineyard Haven hatchery the day before, brushed clean and left out dry. We hoped the were still ripe.

Thankfully they were. It was a little laborious, and about 110 degrees up in the greenhouse, but eventually 8 females and 7 males spawned a total of 135 million eggs. Since our conical can only hold a maximum of 8 million a piece, the excess fertilized eggs were released in Edgartown Great Pond and Tisbury Great Pond. About 50 million each pond.

It was a good day.
