The quahogs have all been sent to their new homes. Total count = 2.5 million per town for a total of 12.5 million produced for Martha's Vineyard ponds. Scallop distribution is just starting....
Without a moment to lose, our larval tanks are full again but this time with oyster larvae! Another spectacular spawn. In 17 years at the Shellfish Group, I have never seen such a high yield during a spawning event! 342 million eggs!
We no longer have swimming scallop larvae in the tanks upstairs. All the scallops have been moved to setting downweller systems. After 10 days of larval phase, 20.3 million larvae were set in our table systems.
The first scallop spawn of the season was another spectacular success. Something is happening this season. Is it the rainy spring and cool temperatures? We couldnt say but the the egg numbers during spawns have been through the roof! Once again a record spawn with 99 million eggs collected. Unfortunately we are only capable of accommodating a certain amount of larvae at the Vineyard Haven facility and the Hughes Hatchery in Oak Bluffs. So 24 million embryos were released in Lagoon Pond on spawning day.
